W. Wayne Karr, 40, activist for legislation to assist gay men and lesbians and for drugs to help people with AIDS. In 1991, Karr attracted national attention when he smashed a window in the Ronald Reagan Building in Downtown Los Angeles to protest Gov. Pete Wilson's veto of AB 101, a gay-rights bill. The action touched off two weeks of demonstrations in Los Angeles. Karr had previously staged a hunger strike in connection with ACT UP/LA to force early release of experimental drugs for treatment of AIDS. Last year he received the Los Angeles mayor's lifetime achievement award for AIDS activism. A native of Evanstown, Pa., Karr worked as a buyer for Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City and later in Beverly Hills. On Tuesday in Hollywood of AIDS.
